What is natural rearing?Natural rearing is about raising dogs in the most natural, biologically appropriate way possible. This approach avoids chemicals, toxic foods, and unnecessary procedures, focusing on what nature intended. At its core is a species-appropriate raw diet, providing dogs with the nutrition they were designed to thrive on. Optimal health is achieved by following eight foundational pillars: nutrition, exercise, clean water, sunlight, temperance (moderation), fresh air, rest, and trust. Trust means believing that these eight pillars of nature will keep your dog truly healthy and thriving.

What is the cancer rate in Golden Retrievers?Golden Retrievers have one of the highest cancer rates among dog breeds. Studies estimate that over 65% of Golden Retrievers in the U.S. will develop cancer at some point in their lives, with some reports suggesting that up to 75% of American Goldens are affected.
-
What are you doing to reverse the cancer epidemic in Golden Retrievers? At High Desert Goldens, we are committed to tackling the cancer epidemic in Golden Retrievers by changing the way we raise and breed our dogs. Our natural rearing program is centered around practices that strengthen each dog’s health from the ground up, minimizing exposure to harmful chemicals and focusing on natural immunity and resilience. Our Goldens are raised on a species-appropriate raw diet, free from the preservatives, fillers, and synthetic ingredients found in commercial kibble. We also avoid vaccinations, chemical dewormers, and conventional flea and tick preventatives, which can weaken the immune system and introduce toxins. Instead, we rely on natural alternatives that support a healthy body without compromising wellness. This holistic approach is aimed at helping our dogs develop strong immune systems that can better defend against illness. We also take every precaution in our breeding practices. Our breeding pairs undergo extensive health testing, including OFA certifications and genetic screenings, to ensure the healthiest possible foundation for our puppies. By prioritizing health in every aspect, from diet to environment, we are doing everything within our power to raise stronger, more resilient Golden Retrievers. While we can’t guarantee that our dogs will never develop cancer, we can promise that we’re committed to reversing the trend. Our goal is to raise healthier dogs and inspire other breeders and dog owners to adopt practices that support long, vibrant lives for this beloved breed. With each generation, we WILL make a difference, working toward a future where Golden Retrievers can enjoy lives free from the high rates of cancer and chronic illness that affect so many today.

Why feed raw?Dogs are healthiest when eating a species-appropriate raw diet, designed to match their natural nutritional needs. Unlike kibble, which is full of fillers and toxic ingredients, raw food aligns with how dogs are meant to eat. Dogs’ teeth aren’t made for chewing; they’re structured to tear and break down large pieces of meat for easy swallowing. If you’ve ever noticed your dog swallowing chunks of food whole, that’s why! A balanced raw diet is the foundation of a strong immune system and overall health. Even the “best” kibble cannot compare, as it lacks essential nutrients and introduces harmful chemicals that slowly undermine your dog’s well-being. Feeding kibble starves dogs nutritionally while exposing them to ingredients they were never meant to ingest. To understand more about commercial dog food, how it’s made, and its impact on your dog’s health, we highly recommend the documentary Pet Fooled. It’s an eye-opener on the realities of pet food today.

If I don't vaccinate my dog, won't they get sick from vaccine preventable diseases?Actually, the opposite is often true. Vaccines contain toxic ingredients and viruses that can harm your dog’s immune, neurological, and nervous systems. Side effects linked to vaccines include allergies, food intolerances, autoimmune disorders, behavioral issues, cancer, and even death. Additionally, it’s not uncommon for puppies to contract the very viruses they were vaccinated against, like Parvo or Bordetella. Puppies and dogs will inevitably encounter viruses, and a strong, naturally built immune system is their best defense to fight off illness and recover quickly. A dog with a robust immune system has the greatest chance of staying healthy and resilient. At High Desert Goldens, we guide puppy owners on how to achieve natural immunity safely.
-
I'm terrified of Parvo, shouldn't I get at least that one vaccine? It’s completely understandable to be concerned about Parvo, given its reputation. However, vaccinating for Parvo isn’t the way to protect your puppy. In fact, the Parvo vaccine itself can sometimes lead to cases of Parvo, as it introduces a weakened form of the virus into the body. This can be particularly risky for puppies with sensitive or compromised immune systems, as the vaccine may actually trigger the illness it’s intended to prevent. Parvo is primarily dangerous to dogs with weakened immune systems, which includes many dogs whose immune function has been impacted by vaccines and other chemical exposures. A naturally raised puppy, with a strong, balanced immune system, has a far better chance of fighting off Parvo if exposed. Puppies naturally carry immunity from their mothers up to around 16 weeks of age, especially when raised in a supportive, low-stress environment. At High Desert Goldens, we focus on building resilient immunity in our puppies through natural rearing practices. We provide education, nosodes (homeopathic remedies to support the immune system), and resources to help our puppy families understand how to prevent Parvo and other illnesses. We teach owners how to support their dogs’ immune systems in a natural, holistic way, eliminating the need for vaccines. If a dog does contract Parvo naturally and recovers, they gain lifelong immunity—an advantage the vaccine cannot guarantee. By building a strong immune system from the start, we give dogs the best chance to resist and recover from illnesses. With a natural approach to health, there’s no need to live in fear of parvo; instead, you’re equipping your dog to thrive naturally and safely.

Is the Rabies vaccine necessary for my dog?In most places, the rabies vaccination is required for dogs. However, this decision isn’t without risks. The potential side effects are listed on the rabies vaccine insert and should be reviewed carefully. Vital Animal offers an excellent free course on rabies and the vaccine—click here to access it. Deciding whether to vaccinate against rabies can be challenging, as both vaccinating and not vaccinating carry risks and consequences. If you choose to proceed with the rabies vaccine, we provide resources on how to support your dog before and after vaccination to help reduce possible side effects.
-
Do you face obstacles because you don't vaccinate your dogs?Occasionally, but not very often. We live in a world where others often dictate what’s “best” for our dogs, and non-compliance can mean exclusion from certain services. Without vaccinations, you may encounter obstacles with boarding, training facilities, competitions, and even therapy or service dog work. For example, some boarding facilities and training programs may require proof of vaccination, making it important to plan ahead if you’re traveling or need care for your Golden. One solution is to ask if a facility accepts titer testing or has waiver options. While we know these hurdles exist, we believe in prioritizing our dogs’ health over convenience or compliance. We choose to support businesses that respect natural rearing principles and avoid those that would pressure us to compromise our dogs’ health.
-
What about flea/tick/heartworm prevention? The flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives on the market today often contain harmful chemicals that can pose serious risks to your dog’s health. Fortunately, there are safe, natural alternatives to these toxic products. Naturally reared, raw-fed dogs tend to be much less appealing to insects and parasites, as their strong immune systems make them less hospitable hosts. Parasites instinctively seek out weaker hosts where they’re more likely to thrive, while raw-fed dogs emit an odor that’s naturally unappealing to insects. By supporting your dog’s immune system with a natural diet, you’re helping them stay parasite-free without relying on chemical treatments.

What type of training should I do with my puppy? At High Desert Goldens, we believe that every puppy deserves the best possible start in life—including proper training. That’s why every single one of our puppies comes with a prepaid virtual training package from AK Kennel to ensure you have the guidance, tools, and confidence to raise a well-mannered, well-adjusted Golden Retriever. Training isn’t just about obedience—it’s about communication, trust, and building a strong bond with your dog. A trained puppy is an engaged, happy, and well-behaved puppy, making life easier and more enjoyable for both of you. Why Training Matters Training is an ongoing journey, not a one-time event. It’s the difference between a peaceful, structured household and years of frustration managing unwanted behaviors. We strongly encourage all our puppy families to start with at least a basic obedience course. Golden Retrievers are highly intelligent and love to learn—but without structure, they can develop bad habits. With commitment, your puppy can grow into a calm family companion, a reliable service dog, or even a competitive obedience athlete—the possibilities are endless! Naturally Reared Puppies Excel in Training One of the most incredible things we’ve noticed about our naturally reared, unvaccinated puppies is that they often have a noticeable edge in training. Because they aren’t exposed to neurotoxic ingredients in vaccines, processed foods, or chemical treatments, our puppies tend to show: ✅ Stronger focus and concentration ✅ Easier learning and problem-solving ✅ Greater adaptability in new environments ✅ More stable temperaments without neurological issues We’ve seen firsthand how natural rearing gives puppies a head start in training, allowing them to absorb new information faster and respond more reliably. Put in the Work Now or Pay for It Later Let’s be honest—you will put in the work either way. You can invest in training early and raise a confident, well-mannered dog, or you can spend years dealing with bad behaviors, frustration, and chaos. Goldens are eager to please, but they aren’t magically trained. Training provides structure and expectations, giving your dog the best opportunity to be happy, balanced, and fulfilled. Bonus for Our Puppy Families To help set our puppies up for success, we also offer a lifetime 15% discount at our store, High Desert Mercantile, where we sell all-natural, freeze-dried raw dog treats—perfect for training and rewarding your pup without toxic ingredients or artificial fillers. At High Desert Goldens, we don’t just send puppies home—we set you up for success with lifelong support, resources, and training opportunities. Because a trained puppy is a happy puppy, and a happy puppy makes for a happy home.

What type of registration do your puppies come with? Our puppies come with a LIMITED AKC registration.
-
Do you offer full registration/breeding rights?Yes! We offer full registration to those committed to natural rearing. We’re passionate about making natural rearing and healthy dogs the standard in the dog world. To qualify for full registration, our guidelines require dogs to be raised naturally—no chemical dewormers, no vaccines, no chemical flea/tick or heartworm prevention, and a raw-fed diet. Additionally, both the mother and father of any potential litter must meet the same health standards we uphold, including OFA certifications for eyes, heart, hips, and elbows, as well as DNA and genetic testing. Our goal is to elevate the Golden Retriever breed by producing the healthiest, strongest, and smartest dogs possible.

I want to be a responsible pet owner, isn't spaying/neutering the right thing to do?Not necessarily. A responsible pet owner prioritizes their dog’s health above all else, and recent research shows that spaying or neutering, especially at a young age (before 2 years), can have lasting health consequences. Removing the reproductive system eliminates essential sex hormones, impacting other systems, such as the adrenal and endocrine systems, which must then compensate. This “compensation mode” places stress on the body over time, increasing risks of obesity, cancer, autoimmune disorders, and torn ligaments, like CCLs. For females, studies conducted at UC Davis suggest that not spaying at all may be the healthiest option, as it preserves the hormonal balance that supports lifelong health. If your dog is always with you or on a leash, the risk of unplanned litters is low. Being a responsible dog owner doesn’t mean sacrificing your dog’s long-term health; it means supervising and managing your pet appropriately. At High Desert Goldens, our contract requires that you not spay or neuter your dog before age 2, as we believe later is better—and for females, never is best.
-
I don't want to deal with heat cycles twice a year, isn't it just easier to spay my female dog? While spaying may seem like a convenient solution, removing a female dog’s entire reproductive system can have significant, lifelong health impacts. Unlike humans, female dogs don’t go into menopause; they continue to have heat cycles throughout their lives. If managing heat cycles isn’t something you’re comfortable with—at least until she’s two years old—we recommend considering a male dog instead. Prioritizing her health and well-being may require adjusting to her natural cycles, but it can be well worth it for her overall health. The most recent research from UC Davis shows that spaying female Golden Retrievers has such severe consequences, they recommend leaving them intact indefinitely.
-
My male dog is exhibiting undesired behaviors, shouldn't neutering fix that?Actually, neutering is unlikely to solve behavioral issues and can sometimes make them worse. The belief that neutering improves male dog behavior is a myth. When a dog is neutered, he loses essential hormones that help regulate mood and confidence. Without these hormones, some dogs become more fearful, which can actually lead to aggression and other behavioral problems. For any undesired behavior, training is the best approach—not neutering. Addressing behavior through positive training techniques helps your dog learn and adapt in a way that supports his well-being and long-term behavior. Neutering won’t replace the guidance and structure that proper training provides.

Your puppies are expensive, why shouldn't I get the same thing from somewhere else cheaper? The truth is, you can’t get the same quality for less. Our breeding program represents years of dedication and effort. Producing second- and third-generation naturally reared puppies is a significant achievement in today’s world, and we’ve gone to great lengths to breed the healthiest dogs possible. Our dogs are not only naturally reared and raw-fed but also undergo rigorous health and training standards. They are AKC registered, OFA certified for eyes, heart, and elbows, and have PennHIP evaluations to ensure excellent hip health. They’ve also been genetically tested and thoughtfully paired to minimize any risk of passing harmful genetic traits onto their puppies. These measures come at a considerable expense, but we believe they’re worth every penny. While some may choose a cheaper option initially, they often end up spending thousands over the years on special diets, medications, and vet bills due to chronic illnesses. Our goal is to provide families with a healthy, well-rounded puppy who is naturally equipped for a long, vibrant life—an investment in quality that can lead to a lifetime of savings and joy. Many people don’t realize the true cost of raising a dog on conventional methods, which can be significant both financially and emotionally. While a lower upfront price may seem appealing, dogs raised on kibble and routine vaccinations often face health challenges down the line. Processed kibble, with its fillers and artificial ingredients, lacks the essential nutrients a dog needs to thrive. Routine vaccinations and chemical preventatives may also weaken a dog’s immune system, leading to a range of chronic issues such as allergies, digestive problems, autoimmune disorders, joint issues, and even cancer. These health problems aren’t just costly to treat; they can also be emotionally draining for families who want their pets to be happy and healthy. Regular vet visits for special diets, medications, tests, and treatments can add up to thousands of dollars over a dog’s lifetime. Owners often find themselves facing frequent vet appointments, trying various prescription foods, and managing long-term medications—all of which can be financially exhausting and emotionally taxing as they see their beloved dog suffer. In contrast, naturally reared dogs, fed a raw diet and raised without unnecessary chemicals, generally enjoy stronger immune systems, better digestion, and fewer health issues. When you invest in a naturally reared dog from the start, you’re not only investing in your pet’s health and quality of life but also in long-term savings. These dogs are more resilient, requiring fewer vet visits and interventions, which translates to reduced medical expenses over their lifetimes. Emotionally, the peace of mind that comes with a healthy, naturally reared dog is invaluable. Knowing that your pet is living a vibrant, energetic life without the constant worry of chronic illnesses or repeated treatments is incredibly rewarding. Ultimately, the upfront investment in a naturally reared dog is an investment in a happier, healthier life for your pet—and a smoother, more joyful journey for you as their caregiver.

I want one of your puppies, but I don't subscribe to your natural rearing philosophy, can I still get one?We completely respect everyone’s choice in how they raise their children and animals, and we understand that natural rearing isn’t for everyone. However, our breeding program is dedicated to raising dogs naturally, and our puppies are intended for families who share or are open to learning about this philosophy. Our goal is to place puppies in homes where their health and well-being are supported in a way that aligns with our commitment to natural rearing—avoiding vaccinations, feeding a species-appropriate diet, and embracing a holistic approach. Allowing our puppies to go to homes where they might be vaccinated or fed in a way contrary to this would undermine the purpose and foundation of our entire program. If you already believe in natural rearing or are beginning your journey on this path and are willing to learn, we welcome you to our family. Our puppies are best suited for families dedicated to raising them naturally, giving them the best chance to thrive in a way consistent with how we’ve raised them.
